Ghana isn't just a stop on the AfroFuture calendar — for a lot of the diaspora, it's the trip. If this is your first time, here's what actually matters once you land.
Getting There
Kotoka International Airport in Accra is the main gateway, with direct flights from New York, London, and a growing number of West African hubs. Land visas on arrival are available for many nationalities, but check requirements before you fly — this changes more often than people expect.
Where to Stay
Osu and East Legon are the two neighborhoods most first-timers gravitate toward. Osu puts you in walking distance of Oxford Street's restaurants and nightlife; East Legon is quieter, leafier, and closer to a lot of the newer festival venues.
Beyond the Festival
Give yourself at least one full day outside the event. Cape Coast Castle, about a three-hour drive from Accra, is a heavy but essential visit — one of the largest former slave trade forts on the coast, now a memorial and museum. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in central Accra is a shorter, lighter add-on if your schedule is tight.
A Note on Pace
Accra traffic is real, especially in the afternoon. Build in more transit time than Google Maps tells you, and don't schedule back-to-back plans on festival days.
